Phenomenal Sneak Peek Into Why You Should Use a DSLR Over a Mobile Phone

Photography is my life. In my childhood, I had a Brownie 120/220 camera, and my interest in photography grew from there. Currently, I will be running a few online events from February 2025 to April 2025 covering the very basics of DSLR and mirrorless ownership. Please be aware, I will use a DSLR to cover mirrorless cameras too. For this event, I will be charging a small fee, and this is because, when I previously ran online events for free, I would get no-shows, and this meant those who wanted to attend were not able. Anyhow, in this article I will focus on the advantage of a DSLR camera over using a mobile device.

The cover photograph for this article was taken with a mobile phone camera, and it was taken on the beach near Orlando, Florida. For those of you who like selfies, a mobile phone works just fine. However, for those of you who demand more in a photograph, you can begin to see issues. Because the photograph is taken on the beach, the sand is reflecting the sun; the camera on the mobile phone does not compensate for the glare. Furthermore, the summer sun is causing the water to show glare, and the sky looks washed out. Finally, the colour of the water is leaning towards grey, and the colour of the sand is off.

The above photograph is a photograph taken at sunrise with a DSLR at sunrise. When comparing the above photograph with the cover photograph, a few differences do appear. First, the camera retained colour, and the colour did not ‘wash out.’ Another, while sunrise is a time when there is a sharp contrast between light and shadow, the glare from the rising sun can be contained, and more detail is shown. Finally, the above photograph does show colour retains a more accurate representation.

What we notice when the photograph, taken with a mobile phone, is doubled in size is that the detail in the photograph begins to be lost and graininess, especially in the sky, starts becoming more noticeable.

In contrast, the photograph with the camera is doubled in size with very little, if any, loss in detail or colour.

So what does this mean? It means a mobile phone works well for taking selfies and pictures you wish to keep on your phone. Also, it means if you keep the photograph small to view on phones and mobile devices. However, if you are wanting to use your mobile phone photographs to print off and frame, for example, or to be viewed by people online who use a desktop or laptop computer, then you may find that you lose a lot of detail while getting a lot of graininess in the photograph. This means a DSLR and mirrorless cameras are superior to mobile phones when it is a photograph you want to print off or to view online. from a computer.
